Norampac and TRI operate black liquor gasification project

Norampac Inc. and ThermoChem Recovery International (TRI) announced the black liquor gasification project at Norampac’s Trenton, Ontario mill has achieved a milestone in transitioning from commissioning to full commercial operation. The mill also recently completed air emissions testing at the facility, as mandated by the Ontario Ministry of Environment. The Norampac facility is the world’s first commercial low temperature black liquor gasification system, and has achieved over 18,000 hours of operation.

The project at Trenton utilizes TRI’s low temperature biomass gasification technology to recover chemicals and energy from the spent pulping liquor the mill produces in the manufacture of corrugating medium. The project meets the total spent liquor requirements of the mill, and supplies cooking liquor and process steam back to the mill to support the pulp and paper making operation.
