Department of Energy Praises Aluminum Industry's Goals for Energy Efficiency, Sustainability

Washington, DC - The U.S. Department of Energy restated its commitment to an aluminum industry vision that would harness technology to make aluminum a preeminent material in terms of its environmental and energy-saving benefits.

"By implementing this new industry vision, Sustainable Solutions for a Dynamic World, the aluminum industry will carry out important goals of the President's National Energy Plan by combining technological improvements with better management practices to conserve fuel and improve energy efficiency through recycling," said David Garman, assistant secretary for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy.

"These new technologies and practices will be put to their best use and will boost the American aluminum industry's global success."

Mr. Garman said the agreement "reflects the commitment of both the department and the aluminum industry to: increase efficiency of primary aluminum production and secondary recycling processes; improve health, safety, and environmental conditions; develop enabling technologies to enhance national competitiveness; and facilitate growth of new applications for aluminum."

J. Stephen Larkin, president, The Aluminum Association, Inc. said, "The North American aluminum industry has a clear vision of the challenges and opportunities ahead." Mr. Larkin noted that by 2020 the industry expects to be universally recognized as a world leader in providing innovative, material-based solutions that are environmentally sustainable and deliver superior value to users.

Key goals of the aluminum industry vision include:

  • To cut smelting energy use by approximately 25 percent to 11 kWh/kg or less by 2020;
  • To achieve additional energy savings targets identified by industry roadmaps;
  • To produce zero-net emissions of greenhouse gases on a lifecycle basis;
  • To increase efficiency of primary aluminum production and secondary recycling processes;
  • To improve health, safety, and environmental conditions associated with all production operations;
  • To develop enabling technologies to enhance national competitiveness; and
  • To facilitate growth in new applications for aluminum.

A new addition to the "roadmap" series related to the Industries of the Future partnership with the Department of Energy, Aluminum Industry Vision is intended to stimulate a wide variety of R & D activities to accelerate technology development throughout the industry (34 pages).
