Environmental
education raises youth’s awareness
The YMCA & JCC of Greater
Toledo celebrated Earth Day by hosting an effective community
teaching project.
Families in the community worked
together to create art projects made from junk and taught the
youngest generation about enviromental conservation at the same
time.
Art submissions were judged by
Judy L. Hagen, recycling program coordinator for the city of Perrysburg,
Ohio.
Other activities promoted awareness,
including earth bracelets featuring brown beads representing the
earth, blue for water, clear for air, green for things that grow
and a yellow bead for the sun.
One entire wall was covered with
paper birthday cakes, in honor of Earth Day’s 35th year,
and each listed a way that members of the community can benefit
the environment. The easy suggestions included turning off the
water while brushing your teeth, recycling your soda cans and
turning off lights in empty rooms.
The recycling education event
met community officials’ expectations and will most likely
become an annual occurance.
