Robotics
team sponsored by Gershow Recycling
Medford, NY— Gershow Recycling
Corp. of Medford, New York, has been an active supporter of the
Longwood High School Robotics Team, including sponsorship of the
Team’s recent participation in the Long Island FIRST (For
Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Regional
Robotics Competition. The team brought home the highly coveted
Animation Award.
Over the course of an intensive
six weeks, the Longwood High School Robotics Team of 24 students
from grades 9 to 12, designed and built a sophisticated, life-size
robot on the basis of specs mandated by the competition and with
help from Gershow Recycling (Gershow). Students were invited to
visit the Gershow facility to select recycled materials for their
robot construction and to put “a reserve” on other
materials. Gershow employees joined in keeping a lookout for sheets
of aluminum, bicycle sprockets and other items requested by the
students.
Competing against over 1,000
students from 29 Long Island school districts for honors and recognition,
the Longwood Robotics Team earned the Animation Award on the basis
of its 30-second animation featuring a young student dreaming
of his future and dedicating his creative talents and knowledge
of technology toward the advancement of future generations.
The FIRST Robotics Competition
was founded by inventor Dean Kamen and, in 2006, involves more
than 28,000 high school students in 33 regional events representing
almost every state and several countries. Participating FIRST
students are eligible to apply for over $8 million in scholarships
from leading universities, colleges and companies.
In its ongoing commitment to
the education and advancement of Long Island students, Gershow
Recycling also underwrites an annual $6,000 scholarship program,
awarding six graduating seniors from three area high schools Longwood,
Patchogue-Medford, and Bellport.
