Republic Services of Ohio fined by EPA
The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has reached agreement with Republic Services of Ohio to pay approximately $1 million in fines and other costs due to noncompliance with Ohio’s environmental laws.
The 258-acre landfill, Countywide Recycling and Disposal Facility in northeast Ohio’s Stark County, has been given a 60-day schedule to submit recommendations for suppressing an underground fire.
The landfill will also have to revise its odor control plan, determine if its liner and gas collection systems are working properly, test the air weekly and collect data to determine the extent of the fire.
An 88-acre section of the landfill where the fire and odor problems are occurring will be closed.
Republic Services of Ohio, owner of the landfill, will pay $250,000 to help surrounding communities. |
