UK’s best recyclers are pensioners
Pensioners are leading the way in the UK environment stakes, with more than 82% of those over 65 claiming to be top recyclers.
The survey into consumer recycling habits was carried out by national waste management company HIPPOWASTE™, and also found that 70% of the nation’s householders rate themselves as good or excellent at recycling.
From a panel of 1,500 people, it was revealed that attitudes towards recycling are more positive than ever before, with more than two thirds of us regularly spending at least half an hour a week tackling household rubbish.
Over 73% of 55-64 year olds and over 82% of 65 year old respondents claimed to always recycle their waste, compared with only 44% of 16-24 year olds who say they find it difficult and aren’t sure what can be recycled.
It’s not all good news for environmentalists. Although nearly 60% of what we throw away could actually be recycled, only one in five of us is achieving this rate of recycling.
