RRI of Ohio to pay penalty for violations
RRI of Ohio, Inc., has agreed to remove excess scrap tires from its Youngstown facility and pay a $8,336 civil penalty in a settlement with Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for violations of Ohio’s solid waste and scrap tire laws.
During repeated inspections of RRI’s scrap tire recovery facility at 1165 Brittain Street, Ohio EPA inspectors documented numerous violations related to the excess accumulation and storage of scrap tires. Improperly stored scrap tires and tire shreds are a fire hazard.
Company officials blame a broken tire shredder for the problems. To correct the violations, RRI has agreed to promptly process or remove all excess scrap tires from the facility, properly store the remaining tires and track facility operations in a daily log to be available for inspection by Ohio EPA.
The $8,336 penalty will go to Ohio EPA’s environmental protection remediation fund.
