Maine Holds Solid Waste Conference

Over 200 recycling center operators attended this year's Maine Recycling and Solid Waste conference in Rockport, Maine. The two-day program included opportunities for operators to become certified in forklift use as well as workshops on promoting recycling, managing construction/demolition debris, developing household hazardous waste management programs, and other topics of interest. Staff from the State Planning Office's Waste Management & Recycling Program assisted with these workshops.

Nearly 30 companies and organizations had booths in the exhibit hall that afforded an atmosphere of open discussion and learning. The keynote speaker was Dr. William Rathje, Director of the Garbage Project. The Maine Resource Recovery Association, principal organizer of the conference, presented several awards, recognizing municipal programs and individuals for their contributions and successes.

Evan Richert, Director of the State Planning Office, presented two Governor's Waste Reduction Awards; one to the Chewonki Foundation, of Wiscasset, and the other award went to the Dragon Products Company.
