ecomaine promotes single stream recycling in Maine
ecomaine, a non-profit, municipally-owned and operated organization, ramped up its recycling operation with a $3.7 million dollar system.
For the past two fiscal years (July 1-June 30), the recycling operation made a surplus of up to $600,000, which has been used to offset some of the other costs of the operating ecomaine.
Last year, the recycling facility processed 24,000 tons of material and expects that volume to increase as people learn that maintaining separate containers is no longer needed.
ecomaine charges cities and towns for each ton of trash generated but collects and processes recyclables at no charge.
