Safety-Kleen assists customers with
hazardous waste manifest changes
Plano, TX— Compliance with new, hazardous
waste manifesting requirements is approaching and Safety-Kleen Systems,
Inc. is moving forward to make the transition easy for their customers.
In 2005, United Sates Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA) and United States Department of Transportation published
a final rule mandating the use of a new Uniform Hazardous Waste
Manifest (UHWM). Beginning September 5, 2006, all shipments of hazardous
waste must use the new UHWM.
While all states are required to use the federal
manifest form, without exception, some states are also adding state-specific
requirements to the federal program, such as outlining the procedure
for returning UHWM forms following completion of a hazardous waste
shipment.
These state-specific requirements are expected
to be relatively minor, but many states have yet to finalize their
regulations. Regardless of when an individual state adopts final
manifesting rules or regulations, the new federal UHWM form goes
into effect on September 5 in all 50 states.
“Safety-Kleen has been working closely with
the EPA and states to prepare the support systems necessary to implement
the UHWM program, including meeting state-specific requirements,”
Longshore said. “After September 5, shippers will need to
check with their waste services provider to ensure that the proper
manifesting procedures for their state are being followed, or else
risk being out of compliance.” |
