Recycling
at Ohio State Fair an “Easy Putt”
Patrons at the 2006 Ohio State Fair in August had
the chance to putt for prizes on “Recycle with SWACO Day.”
Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio (SWACO) employees staffed
several putting greens outside the Cardinal gate of the Fair. Everyone
entering the Fair had the opportunity to putt around bottles, cans
and other recyclables to drive the point that recycling is an easy
putt.
The idea of “putting for prizes” was
to remind people of The Phoenix Golf Links. The Scottish style course
was constructed on top of the old Franklin County Landfill. The
course is an example of reusing what many once thought was unusable.
Also, energy generated by the trash beneath the course powers thousands
of homes in the city of Columbus, Ohio.
SWACO executive director Mike Long said “Since
we began out partnership with The Ohio Expositions Commission, we
have seen a steady increase in recycling on the fairgrounds. Patrons
have told us how much they appreciate the convenience of the SWACO
recycling containers.” |
