Six Month Finished Steel Imports Down 25 Percent from 2000

Washinton, DC - Newly released preliminary government figures covering steel imports for the month of June 2001 show that steel imports increased three percent from May 2001 levels.

Total Steel Mill Products

The preliminary data released show that overall steel imports in June 2001 increased three percent compared to May 2001. The increase in June's imports was due primarily to a increase in imports of semi-finished steel, wire rod and hot-rolled steel. June 2001 imports of finished steel products increased one percent compared to May 2001, while imports of semi-finished steel rose 16 percent.

June 2001 imports of steel mill products were down 27 percent compared to June 2000. June 2001 imports of finished steel products were down 28 percent compared to June 2000 while semifinished steel imports were down 25 percent. January to June 2001 imports of steel mill products are down 30 percent compared to the same period in 2000. January to June 2001 imports of finished steel are down 25 percent compared to the same period last year, while imports of semifinished steel are down 43 percent.

Hot-Rolled Steel

June 2001 imports of hot-rolled steel increased 14 percent compared May 2001. June 2001 imports of hot-rolled steel were down 62 percent compared to June 2000. January to June 2001 imports of hot-rolled steel are down 61 percent compared to the same period last year. These products are the subject of current antidumping and countervailing duty investigations.

Cold-Rolled Steel

June 2001 imports of cold-rolled steel decreased 1 percent compared to May 2001. June 2001 imports of cold-rolled steel were down 19 percent compared to June 2000. January to June 2001 imports of cold-rolled steel are up 2 percent compared to the same period last year. Cut-to-Length Plate June 2001 imports of cut-to-length plate increased 2 percent compared to May 2001. June 2001 imports are down 6 percent compared to June 2000. January to June 2001 imports of cut-to-length plate are down 6 percent compared to the same period last year.

Corrosion-Resistant Steel

June 2001 imports of corrosion-resistant steel decreased 19 percent compared to May 2001. June 2001 imports of these products are down 27 percent compared to June 2000. January to June 2001 imports of corrosion-resistant steel are down 23 percent compared to the same period last year.

Wire Rod

June 2001 imports of wire rod increased 61 percent compared to May 2001. June 2001 imports of these products are up 24 percent compared to June 2000. January to June 2001 imports of wire rod are down 4 percent compared to the same period last year.

Heavy Structurals

June 2001 imports of heavy structurals decreased 16 percent compared to May 2001. June 2001 imports of these products are down 57 percent compared to June 2000. January to June 2001 imports of heavy structurals are down 49 percent compared to the same period last year.

Rebar

June 2001 imports of rebar fell 16 percent compared to May 2001. June 2001 imports of these products are down 37 percent compared to June 2000. January to June 2001 imports of rebar are down 17 percent compared to the same period last year. These products are the subject of current antidumping and countervailing duty investigations.

Hot-Rolled Bar

June 2001 imports of hot-rolled bar decreased 5 percent compared to May 2001. June 2001 imports of these products are down 33 percent compared to June 2000. January to June 2001 imports of hot-rolled bar are down 24 percent compared to the same period last year.

Standard Pipe

June 2001 imports of standard pipe decreased 24 percent compared to May 2001. June 2001 imports of these products are down 27 percent compared to June 2000. January to June 2001 imports of standard pipe are down 6 percent compared to the same period last year.

Oil Country Tubular Goods (OCTG)

June 2001 imports of OCTG increased 11 percent compared to May 2001. June 2001 imports of these products are up 67 percent compared to June 2000. January to June 2001 imports of OCTG are up 83 percent compared to the same period last year. Semifinished Steel June 2001 imports of semifinished steel increased 16 percent compared to May 2001. June 2001 imports of these products are down 25 percent compared to June 2000. January to June 2001 imports of semifinished steel are down 43 percent compared to the same period last year. Imports of these products are used by U.S. steel companies to produce finished products.
