McCrery
first recipient of AF&PA medal
The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA)
presented Congressman Jim McCrery with AF&PA’s Distinguished
Service Medal for his leadership in keeping the forest products
industry a viable part of the United States economy at the Louisiana
Forestry Association’s annual convention at Sam’s Town
Hotel in Shreveport.
The presentation of the medal, originally to be
awarded in August of 2005, was postponed due to Hurricane Katrina.
The AF&PA Distinguished Service Medal was
created in 1999 to recognize the efforts of individuals who perform
outstanding service to the American forest products industry. Congressman
McCrery is the first recipient of the award.
The tax law changes McCrery championed in 2004
allow forest landowners to deduct their expenses sooner for reforestation
and also allow those who sell timber on a lump-sum basis to qualify
for capital gains treatment.
Continuing to fight on behalf of families and
business owners who depend on forest stewardship and products, Congressman
McCrery also authored The Timber Tax Act of 2005, which would reduce
taxes on timber at the time of sale and would equalize tax treatment
for all landowners. |
