July Steel Imports Figures Down Slightly from June, 31 Percent from 2000

Washington, DC - Newly released preliminary government figures covering steel imports for the month of July 2001 show that steel imports decreased 4 percent from June 2001 levels.

Total Steel Mill Products

The preliminary data show that overall steel imports in July 2001 decreased 4 percent compared to June 2001. The decrease in July's imports was due primarily to a decrease in imports of hot-rolled steel, wire rod, and OCTG. July 2001 imports of finished steel products decreased 11 percent compared to June 2001, while imports of semi-finished steel rose 33 percent.

July 2001 imports of steel mill products were down 31 percent compared to July 2000. July 2001 imports of finished steel products were down 33 percent compared to July 2000 while semifinished steel imports were down 24 percent. January to July 2001 imports of steel mill products are down 29 percent compared to the same period in 2000. January to July 2001 imports of finished steel are down 26 percent compared to the same period last year, while imports of semifinished steel are down 41 percent.

Hot-Rolled Steel

July 2001 imports of hot-rolled steel decreased 52 percent compared June 2001. July 2001 imports of hot-rolled steel were down 78 percent compared to July 2000. January to July 2001 imports of hot-rolled steel are down 63 percent compared to the same period last year. These products are the subject of current antidumping and countervailing duty investigations.

Cold-Rolled Steel

July 2001 imports of cold-rolled steel decreased 1 percent compared to June 2001. July 2001 imports of cold-rolled steel were down 25 percent compared to July 2000. January to July 2001 imports of cold-rolled steel are down 3 percent compared to the same period last year.

Cut-to-Length Plate

July 2001 imports of cut-to-length plate decreased 7 percent compared to June 2001. July 2001 imports are down 18 percent compared to July 2000. January to July 2001 imports of cut-to-length plate are down 7 percent compared to the same period last year.

Corrosion-Resistant Steel

July 2001 imports of corrosion-resistant steel increased 14 percent compared to June 2001. July 2001 imports of these products are down 23 percent compared to July 2000. January to July 2001 imports of corrosion-resistant steel are down 23 percent compared to the same period last year.

Wire Rod

July 2001 imports of wire rod decreased 17 percent compared to June 2001. July 2001 imports of these products are down 8 percent compared to July 2000. January to July 2001 imports of wire rod are down 4 percent compared to the same period last year.

Heavy Structurals

July 2001 imports of heavy structurals decreased 1 percent compared to June 2001. July 2001 imports of these products are down 69 percent compared to July 2000. January to July 2001 imports of heavy structurals are down 53 percent compared to the same period last year.

Rebar

July 2001 imports of rebar rose 1 percent compared to June 2001. July 2001 imports of these products are down 17 percent compared to July 2000. January to July 2001 imports of rebar are down 14 percent compared to the same period last year. These products are the subject of current antidumping and countervailing duty investigations.

Hot-Rolled Bar

July 2001 imports of hot-rolled bar decreased 2 percent compared to June 2001. July 2001 imports of these products are down 21 percent compared to July 2000. January to July 2001 imports of hot-rolled bar are down 23 percent compared to the same period last year.

Standard Pipe

July 2001 imports of standard pipe increased 10 percent compared to June 2001. July 2001 imports of these products are down 18 percent compared to July 2000. January to July 2001 imports of standard pipe are down 7 percent compared to the same period last year.

Oil Country Tubular Goods (OCTG)

July 2001 imports of OCTG decreased 19 percent compared to June 2001. July 2001 imports of these products are up 0.2 percent compared to July 2000. January to July 2001 imports of OCTG are up 67 percent compared to the same period last year.

Semifinished Steel

July 2001 imports of semifinished steel increased 33 percent compared to June 2001. July 2001 imports of these products are down 24 percent compared to July 2000. January to July 2001 imports of semifinished steel are down 41 percent compared to the same period last year. Imports of these products are used by U.S. steel companies to produce finished products.
