October Steel Production Reported
Brussels, Belgium— World crude steel production for the 62 countries reporting to the International Iron and Steel Institute stands at 854.1 million metric tons (mmt) for the first ten months of 2004. This is 9.3% higher than for the same period of 2003.
Crude steel production in North America was 11.0 mmt in October, a rise of 4.0% on the same month in 2003. Production in the U.S. reached 8.1 mmt in October, a rise of 4.5% compared to October 2003.
China produced 24.9 mmt of crude steel in October, a rise of 25.4% compared to October 2003. YTD Chinese production stands at 219.1 mmt, 22.0% higher than for the first ten months of 2003. Total production in the Asian reporting countries stands at 395.0 mmt for the year to date. This is an increase of 12.4% on the same period of 2003.
Production for the 25 countries in the European Union is up 2.1% compared to October 2003. YTD production has increased by 5.2% to 161.3 mmt. Production in the United Kingdom rose by 13.4% in October.
