Fleece jackets made from plastic bottles
to be distributed
More than 37 million plastic (PET) bottles were
diverted from the waste stream during Keep America Beautiful’s
Great American Cleanup™ when Keep America Beautiful (KAB)
teamed up with the Aquafina water brand and SAM’S CLUB®
to “Return the Warmth” to communities across the nation
by providing incentives for local, school-based PET recycling projects.
In appreciation to the participating communities,
they will receive 100,000 fleece jackets, made from recycled PET,
for distribution to needy children.
Keep America Beautiful local affiliates encouraged
local school participation in the “Return the Warmth”
recycling program, which took place during the Great American Cleanup,
the nation’s larges community improvement program. In addition
to providing donated fleece jackets, SAM’S CLUB® provided
the 50 schools that collected the most PET bottles with $1,000 grants
in the form of SAM’S CLUB® gift cards.
Volunteers removed more than 228 million pounds
of litter and debris, a 10 percent improvement over the all-time
record of 2005, with more than 7.5 million volunteer hours registered
during the program. |
