November 2003Trex Company Receives GrantWinchester, VA— Trex Company, Inc., manufacturer of Trex® decking and railing, announced the company received approval for a $300,000 grant from the Commonwealth of Virginia to bring more than 2,000 feet of rail track to its Winchester, Virginia manufacturing plant. The rail extension will support the plastics recycling production line Trex initiated in December 2002, improving both the plant’s efficiency and Trex’s customer service. “Our plastic recycling facilities in Winchester, Virginia and El Ejido, Spain are key elements of our comprehensive sourcing strategy to ensure that we have the raw materials we need to satisfy our long-term growth plans,” said Trex Company President Robert Matheny. “This rail extension will help us maximize the use of our Virginia plant expansion for both incoming and outgoing shipments. It will enable us to get product to our distributors more directly and, in many cases, decrease shipping costs. The rail extension will also facilitate our receipt of shipments of plastic and wood scrap from raw materials vendors.” Trex’s recycling facilities are designed to recycle waste polyethylene. The advanced cleaning system employed in its facilities produces polyethylene suitable for use in Trex Company’s Wood-Polymer® lumber manufacturing process. When fully operational, the Virginia facility will generate more than 50 million pounds of recycled plastic annually.
